Brewer/s: Noel Garcia
Website: http://www12westbrewing.com
The good people of 12West know the kinship and bond formed when sharing a pint. Here, people meet, converse and make memories surrounded by good friends and great beer. With a mantra like “crafted for the community” you’d expect nothing less. Noel Garcia and Bryan McCormick built 12West Brewing on authenticity and inclusivity. What started as a kitchen homebrew experiment a decade ago fermented into a full blown obsession. From batch No.1, that fateful concoction inspired Noel, the head brewer, to pursue perfection. Beyond staples on tap that have been painstakingly fine-tuned, Noel funnels his creative drive into an ambitious experimental program. 12West sources local ingredients like blood oranges picked from trees at Agritopia and has gone to such lengths as culturing its own yeast strains from citrus on the farm.

This medium to full-bodied beer, pale to golden in color, is most accurately described as a Bavarian wheat beer. The aroma and flavor of this unfiltered beer is decidedly fruity and spicy evoking tastes and aromas of cloves, nutmeg or sometimes vanilla with banana-like esters. Somewhat sweeter in style with a barely noticeable tartness.

Gimme S'More
Style: Herb and Spice Beer     A.B.V. 5.2%     I.B.U. 13
We’re fans of the great outdoors and one of the things that makes the mind wander to thoughts of camping is a great fire and S’Mores. We’ve taken a newly formulated Brown Ale and blended in a perfect amount of vanilla and created the equivalent of a S’More in a pint glass! While there is no actual chocolate or marshmallow in here, you’ll be hard pressed to convince your senses that they’re not. Enjoy this one outdoors and if you can’t be outdoors, this will make you think of everything you’re missing…

Confluence Brewing Company - Des Moines IA

Brewer/s: John Martin
Website: http://www.confluencebrewing.com/
Confluence brews the hand-crafted beer that Des Moines, Iowa, can call its own. If you savor beer as both a bold taste adventure in the present and a connection with generations past, Confluence Brewery was founded for you. We’re devoted to creating a confluence of great beer, good friends and wonderful times — and look forward to bringing you together with a pint very soon.
Beers:

Farmer John's, Multi-Grain Ale
Style: American Ale     A.B.V. 5.7%     I.B.U. 21
Lightly hopped with English East Kent Goldings hops chosen for their subtle, earthy qualities and finished with Czech Saaz hops for their sweet, floral essence to create a beer that’s light in body and color, with a velvety texture and an aroma as sweet as a freshly cut field of hay. Farmer John’s captures the endless bounty of Iowa in an easy-drinking, blonde ale.

Des Moines IPA, India Pale Ale
Style: American India Pale Ale     A.B.V. 6.9%     I.B.U. 75
Iowa’s steady, well balanced nature is reflected in this IPA with its mix of medium body, lighter color and plenty of malt flavor to balance the massive hop impact. Citrusy and piney hops from the Pacific Northwest offset the robust malt flavor of the two-row barley and medium crystal malts. Des Moines IPA proudly represents the Hawkeye State in the category of American IPA, a favorite of beer connoisseurs all across the country.

Thomas Beck Black IPA
Style: American India Pale Ale     A.B.V. 6.4%     I.B.U. 58
This dark beer pays homage to Des Moines’ history as a late 19th century coal town. Confluence Brewery is located on Thomas Beck Road, which is named after an English immigrant who developed extensive (but now long abandoned) coal mine holdings in Des Moines, including some near our brewery. The dark color comes from black wheat, which is combined with two-row base malt and a good portion of caramel malt and some flaked rye to add a subtle dry, spiciness. Don’t let the color fool you, this dark beer is not roasty or stout-like. We used a special blend of hops, including Nelson Sauvin from New Zealand, to give it a unique flavor and aroma profile completely distinct from its India Pale Ale cousin, Des Moines IPA.

Capital Gold, Golden Lager
Style: Light Lager     A.B.V. 5.1%     I.B.U. 22
Glowing like the Iowa Capitol dome in Iowa’s capital city, Des Moines, this golden lager is brewed with time-honored German brewing methods. Its slightly sweet, bready, malty flavor is balanced perfectly by traditional German noble hops with medium-low hop bitterness. Like building the magnificent 23-karat gold leaf Iowa Capitol dome itself, this beer can’t be rushed. We create it with the finest domestic and imported German two-row barley malt and noble German hops as well as traditional lager yeast. This delicate beauty undergoes a lagering period of three to four weeks after initial fermentation to bring out the best this beer has to offer. The result is a beer which, much like Iowa, has something for everyone — satisfying to the experienced craft beer drinker, yet welcoming to those new to the world of craft beer.

Royal Roots, English-Style Porter
Style: Porter     A.B.V. 5.7%     I.B.U. 27
Iowa has scores of people of English descent and a long history of railroad and riverboat travel, so it’s a perfect place for a porter beer. Long before airline check-in counters, the men who carried traveler’s bags to and from trains and boats were called “porters.” These men supposedly favored this kind of dark ale so much that the style of beer became known as “porter.”

Blue Corn Lager, with Peppers
Style: Light Lager     A.B.V. 5.8%     I.B.U. 21
It seems natural for Iowa-based Confluence to offer a corn-based brew. But while Iowa corn makes great bourbon, it’s not so good for beer. So we use open-pollinated, heritage organic blue corn grown in New Mexico. First we perform a cereal mash by boiling the milled blue corn to expose the starches. The resulting purple porridge is then mashed conventionally with barley malt causing the color to magically disappear and creating a super sweet, almost clear wort. The entire wort is boiled and we add enough Saaz hops for bittering without overwhelming the blue corn flavor. It’s then fermented with German lager yeast and lagered as normal. The resulting beer is big for its style and refreshing on warm days with higher alcohol content than the classic American pilsner.

Rock Dodger, Double IPA
Style: American India Pale Ale     A.B.V. 8.7%     I.B.U. 88
Rock Dodger is our salute to the many beer-loving bicyclists across Iowa, especially those who regularly traverse the 75-yard gravel path from Gray’s Lake bike trail to Confluence Brewery for a pint. We started with American two-row barley malt, Belgian pilsner malt and just a touch of specialty caramel malt. Then we added a blend of hops — including Citra (the star of our popular South Side Citra Ale), Crystal and Simcoe. The result is a beer in which the sweet malt is balanced by moderate bitterness and infused with tropical and citrus fruit flavor and aroma. For a big ABV double IPA that’s as smooth as a freshly paved bike path, try Rock Dodger.
